Five Writing Mistakes to Avoid

Writing for children is a beautiful but delicate craft. Over the years, I’ve learned some common mistakes to avoid. First, don’t underestimate your young readers, they understand more than you think! Keep language simple but meaningful. Second, avoid heavy moralizing; instead, show values through actions and characters. Third, pacing matters, too long or complicated, and little ones lose interest. Fourth, steer clear of stereotypes; embrace diversity and kindness in every story. Lastly, don’t forget the power of rhythm and repetition; kids love stories that sound like songs or poems. When I wrote Ocean’s Magical Farmstead Adventures, I focused on these lessons to create a story that’s fun, heartfelt, and easy to follow. Mistakes are part of learning, but being mindful helps create stories children will treasure.
